Practice Speaking French with AI

You learned French from books, then you hear it spoken and half the letters have gone missing. Real French runs words together, drops the ne and switches between tu and vous. Kippy gives you a private place to speak French out loud, get it wrong, and try again until people understand you. You don't need perfect French. You need to be understood.

Try It Now: Practice Speaking French Out Loud

Play each sentence, then practice it and get instant feedback on your pronunciation. Each one shows a part of spoken French that textbooks tend to skip.
Je sais pas trop.
I don't really know. In everyday speech, the ne of je ne sais pas usually disappears.
On y va ?
Shall we go? Spoken French uses on far more often than nous.
Vous êtes ici en vacances ?
Are you here on holiday? The s of vous joins êtes: vou-zêtes. That's liaison.

What Is AI French Conversation Practice?

AI French conversation practice means speaking French out loud with an AI partner that listens, replies and gives you feedback. In Kippy you talk about your day or work through a real situation, like ordering at a café or booking a doctor's appointment, get a suggested reply when you're stuck, and see corrections on your pronunciation and grammar.

French is hard to speak for reasons a textbook can't fix. Many final letters are silent, then come back in liaison, so les amis sounds like lay-zah-mee. Nasal vowels carry meaning: vin (wine), vent (wind) and vont (they go) differ only in the vowel. And spoken French isn't written French. People say je sais pas, not je ne sais pas, and on instead of nous.

The only way to get these sounds into your mouth is to say them, often, and find out whether they land. Practice out loud first, and the French you hear in real life starts to sound less like a blur.

Practice French Conversation with AI Characters

French conversation has a reputation: people disagree for fun and expect you to hold your ground. In Kippy you choose who you talk to:

Kippy, a blue budgie in glasses

Kippy

Your friendly guide. Asks about your day and helps when you get stuck.
Tippy, a pink budgie with a bow, waving

Tippy

Sweet, playful, and always in your corner. She makes speaking practice feel a little less scary.
Yappy, a purple budgie in glasses and a hoodie

Yappy

Argues back. Over 18? Doesn't always mind the language.

That is good practice for a dinner table in Lyon or a meeting in Montréal, where people push back and you need to keep going. Here is what a conversation with Yappy can look like:

Yappy
Paris en août ? Mauvaise idée. Tout le monde part en vacances.
Paris in August? Bad idea. Everyone goes away on holiday.
Pas d'accord. J'ai allé à Paris en août et c'était super.
Correction
Pas d'accord. Je suis allé à Paris en août et c'était super.
I don't agree. I went to Paris in August and it was great.
Yappy
Pas d'accord. Je suis allé à Paris en août et c'était super.
Super ? Avec trente-cinq degrés et la moitié des boulangeries fermées ?
Great? With 35 degrees and half the bakeries closed?
Oui, mais il n'y avait pas de queue au Louvre.
Yes, but there was no line at the Louvre.
Yappy
Bon. Ça, je te l'accorde.
Fine. I'll give you that one.
An example conversation with Yappy. The wrong helper verb, still understood.

How Kippy Helps You Practice Speaking French

Kippy works like a French speaking partner on your phone. It gives you a conversation to respond to, helps when you get stuck, and shows you which words need work.

How to Practice Speaking French Alone

Look for advice and you'll be told to find a French conversation partner. Easy in Paris, harder almost everywhere else. Most French learners study on their own, and studying on your own usually means studying in silence.

6 min
of speaking time each, if ten learners share a one-hour French class
That is the best case, before grammar explanations, listening exercises and waiting for your turn.

With Kippy you can practice whenever you have five minutes, and say the same sentence ten times without anyone noticing.

French Speaking Situations You Can Practice with AI

Pick a situation, then speak through it:

SituationWhat to practice
Cafés and restaurants Order a coffee, ask for the bill and say what you'd like without pointing.
Appointments Book a doctor's appointment, give your details and explain what's wrong.
Trains and travel Buy tickets, ask about delays and find another way when there's a strike.
Tu or vous Start with vous, then switch to tu when the other person does.
Small talk Weekends, food and the weather, including complaining about the weather.
Work Introduce yourself in a meeting, give an update and disagree politely.
Phone calls Call a landlord, a bank or an office, spell your name and confirm the details.
Moving abroad Talk about your job, your plans and why you're moving, before someone asks you for real.

French Phrases to Keep a Conversation Going

Asking someone to repeat isn't rude in French. A quick pardon is better than nodding along. These use vous for strangers; switch to tu with friends. Listen to each phrase, then try saying it yourself:

When you didn't catch it
Pardon, vous pouvez répéter ?
Sorry, could you say that again?
When it's too fast
Vous pouvez parler un peu plus lentement ?
Could you speak a bit more slowly?
When your first try came out wrong
Je veux dire…
I mean…
When you're missing a word
Comment on dit … en français ?
How do you say … in French?
When you need a moment (with a friend)
Attends, je cherche le mot.
Hang on, I'm looking for the word.
When you want to check you understood
Vous voulez dire que… ?
Do you mean that…?

In Kippy you can use them for real: ask Yappy to repeat, rephrase when Tippy looks confused, and keep going. For more, see conversational French phrases to survive in France and our guide to silent letters in French.

Yes. Ask Kippy in English when the passé composé takes être and when it takes avoir, then switch back to French and keep talking. Kippy explains in your own language, for any language pair.
